The Munich Putsch

Germany: Development of dictatorship, 1918–45

The Munich Putsch (also known as the Beer Hall Putsch) was an attempted takeover of the German government by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in November 1923. At the time, Germany was facing severe economic problems, political instability and anger over the Treaty of Versailles, creating an atmosphere of unrest.

Hitler hoped to seize control in Munich, gain support from the army and public, and then march on Berlin to overthrow the Weimar government. The attempt failed, but it brought Hitler national attention and helped shape his future path to power.
